The lanes at Milton masters are organized by swimming ability and speed, so that people are swimming with others at a similar pace. This makes the workouts more enjoyable for everyone. Some of the lanes rotate through the days of the week, while others remain constant.
Lanes 1 - 4 rotate each workout day. When you hear someone refer to a lane number, it indicates the lane that group would normally swim in on a Tuesday. On Tuesdays lanes go from fastest to slowest starting with lane 3, 2, 4, and then 1. Each workout day the lanes shift one to the right, circling back to lane 1. Therefore looking at the fast lane (which we call lane 3), they swim in lane 3 on Tuesday, lane 4 on Thursday, lane 1 on Saturday, and lane 2 on Sunday. A similar rotation holds for each other lane.
Lanes 5 and 6 are the fitness lanes, and they remain in the same lanes during all workouts.
If you feel that you'd like to move up to a faster lane, or you're finding it too quick in your lane, feel free to move up or down. Likewise if a lane is overcrowded and the adjacent lane is quieter, the slower or faster swimmers should move to the quieter lane (depending on whether it is a slower or faster lane).
